Crafting With Edibles

A popular crafting technique is to create things with edibles. Everything from edible clay to dehydrated fruits. You'd be amazed at what you can make with items already in your kitchen.
One of the most recent and interesting things I've seen created with edibles are dehydrated chunks of potato's that are dried and used to create strings of grungy garland. Basically you cut up small chunks of white potato's, roll them in cinnamon to give them that grubby look and dehydrate them. They are used to place on a string like garland. I would imagine you could probably use sweet potato's or even yams as well.

Another interesting item you can create is your own old fashioned sugar cones. These are so easy to make and you really only need four things to make them. They consist of taking a few cups of white or brown sugar and adding a teaspoon of water to the sugar. Mix it until it starts to stick together. Take some cooking spray and lightly spray the inside of a plastic drinking cup and then pack your sugar mix into the cup. Turn it upside down on a plate and set it out to dry. You can use cheesecloth that you've coffee or tea stained and tie around the base of the cone using some cotton string for a nice Primitive look. You can also make your own homemade cinnamon clay by taking two cups of cinnamon, one cup of apple sauce and one-third cup of white glue and mix all ingredients together. I've also added ground cloves to this mixture for added scent. But it smells wonderful with just the cinnamon. You can use this clay for making ornaments, figurines or just about anything you can imagine up.

The above edibles are great for long lasting crafts. Although they are made with edible ingredients I have yet to hear of any of them going bad or attracting bugs. I would recommend you test them out though prior to offering items for sale to the public. One edible item that makes a great short term decoration that I've made during the holiday season is sugared holiday fruits for a table centerpiece. Take your favorite fruit such as pears or oranges and lightly brush on some egg whites onto each fruit. Then roll the fruit in white sugar. Set in a bowl or use florist foam and tooth picks to create a stunning sparkling centerpiece. The fruit will last several days but is not edible once you brush on the egg white. So don't let anyone eat it! Perhaps you could research though and see if you could substitute the egg whites for honey or something that could be eaten. If you plan on having it on your table for several days I'd recommend putting it in the refridgerator when your not using it.
